Universal Fitness cycles 900+ miles for Critical Care at Royal Stoke

Members of Universal Fitness in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent have raised over £3,000 for the Critical Care Unit at Royal Stoke University Hospital after completing a demanding indoor cycling challenge in memory of a loved one.

The fundraising event saw participants take on a virtual journey using cardio bikes, cycling the distance from Dawlish to Whitby, followed by Whitby to the Lake District. The route was chosen to honour Mel Brayford, who sadly passed away on 3 December 2025. These were among her favourite holiday destinations.

Organisers initially set a target of 483 miles. On the day, they pushed far beyond that, completing an impressive 916 miles.

The event, held on Saturday 14 March, brought together gym members and supporters determined to give back to the team who cared for Mel during her time on POD 4 Critical Care.

Fran, who organised the fundraiser, said the challenge was their way of saying thank you for the care and support Mel and her family received.

“The care Mel received, and the support provided to her family from all the staff on POD 4 Critical Care was outstanding. This is our way of saying thank you.”

Sandra Barrington, Matron for Critical Care, praised the efforts of everyone involved.

“I would just like to say a huge thank you to Fran for organising this fundraising event at Universal Fitness in memory of a family member who sadly passed away in December.

“I also really appreciate the kind feedback shared about the care and support provided, and for thinking of us to receive this donation.

“Charity donations to Critical Care are invaluable and we ensure they benefit our patients and their family.”

Funds raised will support patients and families receiving care within the Critical Care Unit at Royal Stoke.
