Port Vale Foundation launched Forget Me Knot FC in August as a space for bereaved dads to come together, connect and feel understood. The group has grown quickly and gained strong attention locally and online, showing how much this support is needed.
Forget Me Knot FC meets every fortnight and gives dads time to talk if they want, connect with others who understand and release some energy through football. For many, the time in the sports hall is as important as the conversations. It helps clear the mind, let emotions settle and feel part of a team again.
Sessions start with an hour of conversation and then move into football or sport-hall activity. The conversational part is described as an “open space where men can talk through the highs and lows of their week without judgment or the need to censor themselves.”
The group also keeps in touch throughout the week through a WhatsApp chat for anyone who needs to reach out.
Brett Pointon, who leads the group at Port Vale Foundation, said, “Forget Me Knot FC was created to give bereaved dads a place to belong. It has become a supportive community where dads can connect, release and understand each other in a way only those who have experienced baby or child loss can. The response has been incredible and shows how much this space is needed.”
UHNM bereavement midwives Sarah and Caroline attend the sessions and work closely with Port Vale Foundation and Joe from Dove. Their involvement helps create a safe and welcoming environment for dads right from the start.
Forget Me Knot FC welcomes dads, uncles, brothers and grandads who have experienced baby or child loss. Sessions run every other Monday at the Port Vale Foundation, Car Park C, from 18:30 to 20:30.
