Medical students have high hopes for Kilimanjaro climb

Two determined medical students from Keele University are setting their sights on Africa’s highest peak to raise money for UHNM Charity.

Jenna Taylor and Georgia Featherstone will take on Mount Kilimanjaro alongside working in a rural hospital in Tanzania while on their seven-week elective study period.

Jenna, 23, said: “Excited for our upcoming adventure, we began looking at any extra-curricular activities we could embark on. As avid hikers, the opportunity to climb Kilimanjaro was one we leapt at so we could raise some money to support the wards at Royal Stoke University Hospital as it is where we have trained for the past four years.

“As future doctors, we know how much this support means to patients and staff. Taking on Kilimanjaro feels like a powerful way to show that. You only need a day walking around the wards to see what an amazing difference UHNM Charity make.”

The duo will begin the climb which reaches heights of nearly 6,000 metres on Thursday 1 May and aim to reach the summit on the morning of 5 May.

Georgia, 22, added: “It’s going to be a big challenge for us but we both love hiking and while we are there, we thought why not raise money for UHNM Charity. We have seen the incredible work they do for the children and their families, so we want to give back and make a difference.

“With just a few days to go we are excited, nervous and incredibly motivated. Climbing Kilimanjaro is a big challenge but knowing why we are doing it keeps us focused. It’s a cause close to our hearts and we really appreciate everyone who’s backed us so far.

“We also hope this challenge inspires others to raise money and get behind the cause!”
