County renal unit goes the distance for UHNM Charity

Dedicated staff from the Renal Unit at County Hospital, Stafford have completed a challenging ‘stepathon’, to raise funds for UHNM Charity and awareness for the growing number of people living on dialysis in the UK.

The team walked an impressive 70,951 steps over a month, to represent the number of patients on dialysis or with a kidney transplant in the UK.

More than £900 has now been raised and will be used to help patients with their wellbeing and mental health during their treatment.

Maria Szabo, Senior Staff Nurse, said: “We wanted to raise funds for our incredible patients on dialysis, with each staff member walking 70,951 steps. The team and I also wanted to raise awareness of how important your kidneys are. People are unaware of how sensitive they are and how easily they can be damaged, so we hope we have started conversations about the importance of our kidneys.

“I’m so pleased we have completed our challenge and raised a fantastic amount. I am very proud of the team!”

Lisa Thomson, UHNM Charity Director, said: “Congratulations to the team for completing this challenge. It is fantastic to see our staff going above and beyond, not only in care but also in advocacy. The team have shown compassion, energy and commitment to raising awareness for a cause that affects thousands of lives across the country.”

The stepathon was part of a wider awareness campaign supported by UHNM Charity, which helps fund initiatives across Royal Stoke and County Hospitals.
