Children to benefit from new heart scanners thanks to UHNM Charity

Whilst Santa was busy delivering presents to children on Christmas Eve, UHNM Charity were thrilled to celebrate the arrival of two children’s heart scanners- a gift to younger patients and staff at UHNM made possible thanks to our amazing supporters!

The scanners will be used to pick up heart defects in patients aged from premature babies to 16 years old.

Dr Ramesh Pavanasam, Consultant Paediatrician said: “The detail and accuracy of these new scanners is incredible. The scanners will be used on both wards and outpatient clinics, so lots of patients will be able to benefit from them and they will reduce waiting times for families in our area.”

UHNM Charity was able to purchase the scanners thanks to supporters like Chris Gibbs, who completed a 350-mile trek from Eastbourne to Royal Stoke in memory of his late son Thiago who received care at Royal Stoke.

Chris' trek raised a staggering £27,500 which was split between UHNM Charity and Birmingham Children's Hospital. 

Chris, who was able to see the scanners along with wife Angelica on Christmas Eve said: “It’s been a long journey, but every day for us will be happier knowing these will be here. We feel comforted knowing they’ll be put to good use and make a difference to so many other people.”

Chief Executive Tracy Bullock as well as colleagues from across Staffordshire Children’s Hospital at Royal Stoke and our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) were on hand to congratulate Chris for his efforts and see the scanners first hand.
