Charity funds Innovative Hydration Sweets Trial

Thanks to UHNM Charity funding, Elderly Care wards at UHNM are trialing Jelly Drops- a new initiative to boost hydration and nutrition amongst patients who are struggling to eat or drink.

The sugar-free and vegan sweets are made of 95% water and are designed to boost hydration.

Inventor Lewis Hornby was inspired to create water sweets after his late grandma Pat, who had dementia, was struggling to hydrate.

Lee-ann Boardman, Senior Sister said: “Feedback from the trial so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Many patients suffering from dementia struggle to maintain hydrated as they often don’t have the dexterity to drink. Being colourful and reminiscent of sweets, we’re able to leave the tray of Jelly Drops on the patient’s bedside table and let them help themselves, boosting water intake."

Steve Rushton, UHNM Charity Manager added: “UHNM Charity were pleased to support this initiative way of encouraging hydration and nutrition in patients suffering from complex health issues or dementia.”
