Charity-funded scanner provides cancer and trauma treatment closer to home

Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent cancer and trauma patients are now able to access better diagnosis and treatment closer to home thanks to charity funding.

A cone beam CT scanner has been funded by University Hospitals of North Midlands Charity for patients attending the Maxillofacial Department at Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Prior to its purchase patients needing certain scans of their face, mouth or jaw structures would have had to travel to Manchester or Birmingham.

Dr Craig Pearce, Oral and Maxillofacial Consultant at UHNM said: “The cone beam scanner allows us to provide patients with a faster, higher quality and more accurate assessment of their trauma or cancer locally. Up until now we’ve only been able to get 3D images of bone and dental structures around the face by referring patients to other NHS Trusts in Manchester or Birmingham which is often a stressful experience for them.”

There are also benefits to patient flow across UHNM with patients from County hospital in Stafford also benefitting.

Dr Pearce added: “The addition of the cone beam scanner to our department means reduced pressures on CT scanners in other areas across Royal Stoke and County hospitals resulting in shorter waiting times for patients needing imagery of their heads, chests and abdomens. Patients from County needing scans will also now be referred to Royal Stoke saving journeys further afield.”

Joe Gosling, 30, from Biddulph was one of the first patients at UHNM to use the scanner.

Joe said: “The process was very quick, efficient and well-managed. Without the scanner it would have meant a full day off work and commute, but I was able to see my consultant straight away and plan my next steps. It’s been very good overall at UHNM, the team have been excellent and quick to respond to my treatment.”

The cone beam scanner is also safer for patients as it emits a lower dose of radiation compared to a conventional CT scan.
