A doting grandfather is running this year’s London Marathon to raise money to thank at staff at University Hospitals of North Midlands’ Maternity Unit who cared for his first grandson born in December 2023.

Simon Holland, from Meir Heath, decided to apply for this year’s London Marathon to raise funds for UHNM Charity and say thank you.

Simon said: "Sebastien is four months old now, he's great, and the care and support that my daughter in law, son and my grandson had before, during and after the birth was brilliant. He was delivered safely, he's healthy, and the kindness of staff was fantastic, so it was a no brainer for me when deciding who to raise funds for. So I want to say a big thank you to the midwives, nurses and support staff who make a difference to all the new arrivals."

Several years ago, Simon decided to get fitter and take up a new hobby by taking part in local park runs, which by his own surprise he found infectious and thoroughly enjoyable. Now having finished his 158th run, a couple of half marathons and a member of Blythe Bridge running club, Simon is well on his way to completing his first full marathon.

Simon said: "Training is going very well, I'm up to 18 and a half miles. Last week, I think I ran 30-35 miles in total over the week. I am getting great support from my running club, who are training with me and giving me advice which is helping me a lot along the way.

“A marathon is a big step, and it’s six-weeks on Sunday until the race so I'm starting to get a buzz and become excited for it!"

Steve Rushton, UHNM Charity Manager added: “We are delighted that Simon will be taking on the 2024 London Marathon to raise vital funds for the Maternity Unit at Royal Stoke. We know that both staff and patients will benefit from the donation to the unit.”
