A £10,000 donation to UHNM Charity will fund new scanning equipment to improve care for breast cancer patients at County Hospital in Stafford.
The funds were raised by a local breast cancer support group "Terrible Titties & Other Bitties". The Staffordshire based breast cancer support group was founded by Rachael Jordan and Natasha Moore after their own diagnoses.
After completing treatment, they felt patients needed more support once chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery had finished.
Rachael Jordan said:
“During treatment, the team here were incredible. But once treatment ends, you come out of cancer a different person. Many of us were dealing with anxiety, depression and paranoia.
“We realised we were all facing similar challenges, so we created a support group”.
The group now supports around 300 members across Staffordshire and surrounding areas. Raising funds through community events, including an annual charity ball.
The £10,000 donation will contribute towards upgraded scanning equipment within the breast clinic.
Mr Sekhar Marla, Consultant Surgeon said:
“At the moment, if a patient develops a fluid collection after surgery, they often need to attend radiology for further scans. With this equipment, we can assess and treat them in clinic under ultrasound guidance improving the patient’s overall experience and saving them time. We are also able to use this scanning equipment to plan operations, so this will directly improve the care we provide”.
Speaking at the cheque presentation, Rachael added:
“If it wasn’t for the NHS and the staff involved, many of us might not be here. We wanted to give back in a way that directly helps people going through treatment now”.
UHNM Charity thanks everyone who supported their fundraising efforts. The donation will make a clear difference to breast cancer services provided across both County Hospital in Stafford and Royal Stoke University Hospital.
