Friends Complete Hike for Critical Care

A group of friends have completed one of the UK's most grueling hikes in aid of UHNM's Critical Care Unit.

‘Made of Ale'; Steven Mills, Elliot Jones, Steve James, Matthew Bowker, Stephen Woods, Ben Hulse and Dean Bishton, who last year completed the 50-mile Longmynd Hike.

Staff on the Unit welcome the group to the Royal stoke to present their cheque for £5,313.12.

Steven Mills (third left) said: "We raised the money for this cause because they were the team that initially cared for my partner Carla and saved her life after she sustained a severe head and brain injury in late 2017."

"In December of that year, Carla was rushed to the Royal Stoke University Hospital following a severe head and brain injury. Carla spent three weeks in Critical Care, the first one in an induced coma. She was reliant on various life sustaining machines and underwent several lifesaving operations including a craniotomy, where she had a large section of her skull removed to repair bleeding and allow for swelling of her brain. Things looked very bleak at times and Carla’s life hung in the balance, but the Critical Care team were absolutely incredible and gave absolutely everything to give Carla the best chance. Nothing at all was too much trouble and they cared for Carla like she was one of their own. She literally would not be here now if it was not for this incredible team."

He added: "I am so incredibly proud of the lads for doing the hike, pressing on and walking non stop for nearly a whole day. There were lots of physical and mental challenges overcome, but they did it because we know our donations will make such a difference to people at the worst time of their lives. Personally having seen what Carla and others have had to go through, I knew I had to complete it and that kept me moving, albeit at a crawl at the end!"
