Susan's Soul Night is from the Heart

A former cardiology patient has held a musical fundraising night to thank the team of UHNM staff who saved her life.

Susan Leeson organised a ‘Godfathers of Soul’ fundraising event  in her local club in Crewe to raise funds for the Cardiothoracic Ward at the Royal Stoke University Hospital who cared for her after a triple bypass.

The event, which also featured a raffle and Susan’s husband Dave taking part in a sponsored head shave, raised almost £1,500 on the night. Susan’s employers then donated the amount needed to make a £2,000 donation.

She visited the Royal Stoke University Hospital recently to present her cheque to Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon Mr Richard Warwick.

Speaking about her experience, Susan told us: “One evening after work I felt extra tired, and my angina felt worse than normal. After it moved into my arm my daughter called for an ambulance. I was lying in Critical Care thinking I’m not going to make it, but Mr Warwick and the entire staff at the hospital were amazing.”

Susan also had an inadvertent insight thanks to the Channel 5 documentary ‘Critical Condition’, filmed at Royal Stoke.

“Before my procedure, Mr Warwick sat with me and went through it all, which made me feel better. We then happened to come across the programme on my tablet with Mr Warwick performing the exact same procedure on another patient- it was so surreal!”

Susan’s husband Dave added: “After being amazed by the hospital, we’ve definitely got the fundraising bug, and will be doing something again soon.”
