Card group's crafty way to raise breast cancer funds

A craft group from Biddulph has raised £500 for local Breast Cancer Care.

The U3A Biddulph Friday Card Group donated the money to UHNM Charity through the sales of its cards over the past 12 months.

Funds will be spend at the Royal Stoke University Hospital’s Breast Care Unit.

The Card Group’s 15 members, who meet weekly in Lund House, a former doctor’s surgery in Biddulph, sold the cards to family and friends.

Rita Bellwood, Friday Card Group Leader said, “We have been fundraising for other local charities that are relevant to the group for a number of years through the sale of our cards. Unfortunately two members of our group have recently received treatment from the Breast Care Unit at the Royal Stoke Hospital, so that’s why we decided to fundraise for them.”

“We take pleasure knowing the cards we make can help the Unit which is of benefit to so many people.”

U3A (the University of the Third Age) is a UK-wide movement which brings together people in their ‘third age’, the time after retiring and raising a family, to develop their interests and continue their learning in a friendly and informal environment. U3A Biddulph has 620 members from the town and surrounding area, running 33 different groups including keep fit, crafts and languages.

James Wood from UHNM Charity who presented the group with their cheque said, “The talents of the Friday Card Group’s members will be of benefit to many local people. As well as learning a new skill and meeting new friends, they’ve helped enhance the experience of patients using the Breast Care Unit at the Royal Stoke, which is fantastic.”
